"Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you.” Deuteronomy 5:12
“Then he said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” Mark 2:27
God wants us to have rest, and His idea of rest is more than sleep. Rest is an invitation to stop, be still, and reflect on our lives with Him. While we can do this every day, the Sabbath gives us a dedicated reminder to pause and turn our attention back to God.
Our spiritual lives can suffer when we are constantly busy. Life is about more than what we accomplish. God created us to be human beings, not merely human doings. When we rest, we are strengthened in the identity He has given us.
A desire to prove ourselves can keep us from receiving God’s gift of rest. When our self-worth becomes tied to what we do, we may struggle to stop working. Busyness can become a way to avoid ourselves, even an unhealthy habit. We may focus so much on activity that we lose touch with who we are as children of God. Over time, this imbalance between work and rest can leave us spiritually shallow and emotionally burned out.
God invites us to rest so He can work in our lives from the inside out. Often, our drive to stay busy is rooted in fear. Slowing down long enough to examine our hearts can feel uncomfortable, but we do not need to be afraid. When we honestly look within, we meet the God who loves us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Even when we see attitudes or behaviors that need to change, we also find grace. In rest and reflection, God works on our hearts, helping us realign our lives with the path He wants us to follow. This is one of the ways He blesses us through rest.
