The Desire to Be Right

Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

The desire to be right is a natural human tendency. Often, it shows up in our search for affirmation for what we already believe. We form a point of view and then look only for evidence that supports it.

Social media, news sources, and even the people around us can reinforce our perspective, whatever it may be. Yet life’s deeper issues are often bigger than our limited understanding. If we are not careful, our desire to be right can keep us from seeing more clearly.

Hungering and thirsting for righteousness in ourselves can be a costly path. None of us has complete knowledge. When we act as though we have all the answers, we often silence those who disagree with us. In doing so, we may push away the very people who could help us grow in wisdom and broaden our perspective. Listening to different viewpoints can enrich our lives. At the same time, greater understanding does not mean that wrong becomes right. God has given us moral absolutes, yet He also calls us to love people even when they fall short of them.

So where does God intend for our hunger for righteousness to be satisfied? He sent Jesus into the world to give us the righteousness we could never secure on our own. When we receive righteousness through Christ, we no longer need to chase affirmation through worldly sources.

Jesus’ righteousness is enough, and His grace is sufficient. When our need for righteousness is met in Him, we are freed to listen, to understand others, and to grow. As our craving for self-affirmation fades, our lives become richer through humility, grace, and deeper understanding.
